So I’ve decided that I can’t sell books seriously without getting a media scouting tool, but which one??
I’ve looked into to ScoutPal, MediaScouter, Seller Fusion and I don’t know who else and my head is STILL spinning!!
I’m in a ural section of Upstate NY and often where I travel cell phone signals can be hard to get what should I get.
Gary, you wrote earlier that you’d not recommend anybody subscribe to the ScoutPal service because of problems you were having. Have things improved at all??
I’ve not got a clue what I need or what is best, needed… I’m really stuck!!
So here’s what I’d like to ask…
1. Who Uses What??
2. Why Do YOU Feel It’s BEST For You?
3. What’s Your Favorite Feature
Thanks in advance!!

Stephen,
The problems ScoutPal was having that I wrote about previously have been resolved and it has been working fine for more than a month.
However, if you are in an area where cell phone service can be spotty, SP may not be the best solution. For SP, in addition to cell phone service, you also need to have access to your cell phone carrier’s Internet access which may not be available in a predominantly rural area.
My experience with Verizon, which I’ve used for several years, is that Internet access isn’t a problem in or near towns of 20 to 25 thousand people or more. However, when you get into towns smaller than that, it can be a hit and miss situation. I regularly go to book sales in small towns in rural areas of ND and MN where they have good cell phone service but no Internet service via Verizon. How it is in other areas of the country I don’t know.
Other than access via cell phone the only other option that I’m aware of is betting a scanner/pda arrangement.
I did do some looking into a couple of those services when SP was having their problems, but didn’t dig deep enough to really recommend one vs another. Perhaps someone else here has some experience with them and can make some recommendations.
I believe there are several people who use some of the other services that frequent the eBay_Establishings group. You might ask there and get some good advice.

Final outcome…
I’ve decided to go with the PDA/scanner setup.
While it might not be as “up to the second” current as internet access via a smart phone, I’m not convinced it won’t be a spotty situation at best.
With the scanner/PDA I can download as often as I want, but I won’t be locked into having to have a cell/internet signal.
I’m gonna give it a go for the next 6mos-yr, and re-evaluate my position at that time.
I figure at this point, something is better than nothing if a person is REALLY serious about online book selling.
Thanks for the comments!!

I’ve scouted books for a while and used Scoutpal off and on for part of the time. I’ve considered going the PDA/scanner route myself but just haven’t dropped the cash yet. I’d be interested to hear what you get. The model I was looking at was a Dell Axim X5 and there are a ton on eBay.
Good luck!
