The 2008 Garage Sale Challenge

Ken & Deb Week One

May 9, 2008 · No Comments

On Saturday we went to six garage sales and one auction preview.

At the first couple of sales we bought a copy of “The Mathematics of Investing: A Complete Reference” for $3.00 (What was I thinking?) and two collectors plates for .50 all now in our garage sale pile.

Our third stop was an unadvertised sale a couple of doors away from another sale on our list. Deb grabbed a Candace Reiter Catzilla Ceramic Halloween Tray and bowl, two Ursula Dodge Goblins Trick or Treat Bowls and three bat/ghost salt & peppers for $7.00. She thought perhaps she’d payed too much but the Catzilla tray hit $24 within 12 hours of listing it. The Catzilla bowl also has a bid we also listed one of the Ursula Dodge bowls but so far no interest. The S&P’s went in the garage sale pile.

While Deb was running the above lot to the car I bought a Borden’s Malted Milk Tin in not so great shape, a wooden mallet, a collapsible pool cue and a copy of “How to Paint” by Bernard Dunstan for $5.00. The pool cue went in the garage sale pile. The rest are listed. I’ve had pretty good luck selling things like the mallet as “primitive” but so far no takers on this one. The Borden tin has reached $15.50 as I write.

At a later sale we bought a copy of “The Miracle Ball Method” by Elaine Petrone new in box for $2.00. No it’s not something you’d see advertised in a spam email it’s an exercise book and two rubber balls to use treat back and shoulder pain. It retails for ~$20.00.

We stopped in at the preview for an on-site estate auction but didn’t stay. There was some good stuff but it was all things we’re unfamiliar with value wise - i.e. old radios, Fenton Glass with the tags still on and other things. There was also a tremendous amount of junk. If there hadn’t been a lots more sales to get to we probably would have stayed.

As it was, we attended a few more sales but didn’t buy anything.

On Sunday we attended a monthly antiques auction that we frequent where we bought the following.

A lot 80 postcards and one photo $27.50. The prize here was 5 Pontiac Advertising postcards from the 1940’s. Auto ephemera from the 40’s 50’s and 60’s has done well for us. All of these had bids within an hour of posting. When we took a closer look at home found that a “Hold to the Light” Christmas postcard which may be worth even more. There are a few other cards that should sell pretty well. Most of the rest of these are greeting cards of no great distinction. We listed them in three lots by theme.

All of the above is listed this week some of it ends Sunday some on Wednesday. The rest we hope to get listed next week.

A lot of vernacular photos for $15. This was a mistake. We confused it with another lot. There aren’t really enough sell-able photos to make it worth while. We may be able to find enough to recoup our expense.

Another lot of old photos and real photo postcards for $16.50

A hand made wool cardigan with square dance figures and music notes on it for $11.

A lot of ladies hats and gloves for also for $16.50

Here are our totals so far…..
