Friday 5/30 Estate Hunting

May 30, 2008 · No Comments

Why is it there can be two Estate sale less than a mile apart but so different price wise.

Do some people hope to have fewer sales at higher prices or sell everythting at low prices.

First sale,

Very very pricey,

I was interested in 2 audio book Tapes (working on a lot) & they wanted 3.00 each.

I looked around but didn’t see anything compelling to buy.

At the Next Sale, I spent $7.00

I got a variety of cookbooks, art books & 1933 yearbook for Washington Irving High school in NYC.

In some of the books were Postcards, Such as this gorgeous one from the Stork Club.

A bellydancer ’s belt

Two copper enamel Pins,

Horse head cuff links

Vintage Knitting Needles,

2 Vintage Aprons

A vintage Mod makeup compact

Mileage was 5 miles  Round trip.

I got enough items to keep my self busy tomorrow ( it’s suppose to rain).

I’m also working on a sales update.

Can anyone tell me the cheapest and safest way to ship breakable china, plates, dishes, etc.

A Fix For The Table Problem Some People Are Having

May 27, 2008 · No Comments

I’m crossing my fingers when I say this, but I think I’ve found what is causing the problem some people hare having with the tables they insert in their posts to run off the right side of the page.

Actually, I think the problem is two-fold.

First, I went through the HTML provided in the How To Insert A Table In Your Post tutorial and found two errors in the code. These have been corrected. If you are using tables to track your process, you will need to copy and past the corrected HTML and use that in future posts.

Second, looking at the actual HTML of the problem tables, there is a lot of extra code there that is not in the HTML provided in the tutorial as well as some code that has been altered. After playing with a few test posts, here’s what appears to be happening and how it can be fixed.

Book Scouting Tool… I Need Recommendations!!!

May 27, 2008 · 4 Comments

So I’ve decided that I can’t sell books seriously without getting a media scouting tool, but which one??

I’ve looked into to ScoutPal, MediaScouter, Seller Fusion and I don’t know who else and my head is STILL spinning!!

I’m in a ural section of Upstate NY and often where I travel cell phone signals can be hard to get what should I get.

Gary, you wrote earlier that you’d not recommend anybody subscribe to the ScoutPal service because of problems you were having. Have things improved at all??

I’ve not got a clue what I need or what is best, needed… I’m really stuck!!

So here’s what I’d like to ask…

1. Who Uses What??

2. Why Do YOU Feel It’s BEST For You?

3. What’s Your Favorite Feature

Thanks in advance!!

Gary’s 2008 Garage Sale Challenge - Week 4

May 27, 2008 · 3 Comments

Monday evening saw the end of the auctions for the items purchased during the third week of The 2008 Garage Sale Challenge.

This week saw eighteen items sell for a total of $589.03 with a rather disappointing sell-through rate of only 56%. However, eight of the thirty-two items listed last week were re-lists and if I subtract those the sell-through rate for the new items was 71% which is more in line with where I hope to be consistently. In addition, nine books sold on Amazon for a total of $298.12.

The most disappointing item this week was the Fisher Price Toy Wagon pull-toy which brought only $27.99. I’d felt that, as a minimum, this would have ended somewhere between $50 and $75.

Over the course of the week, I received several emails from interested buyers concerning the postage for this item along with one of the other listings that make me wonder if buyers are suddenly paying a lot more attention to what actual shipping costs are for things they are considering bidding on. I’ll be writing a post about this, and how it may affect sellers, on The Auction Rebel tomorrow.

Here’s how things look after then end of the fourth week of the Challenge:

Ended eBay Sold Amazon Sold Cost List Fees FV Fees PayPal Fees Incid. Fees Miles Net Profit Total
5/11 $193.46 $59.99 $35.35 $6.30 $18.04 $10.27 $0.00 $24.75 $150.37 $158.74
5/18 $923.70 $247.40 $59.55 $8.15 $109.00 $35.63 $0.00 $46.97 $911.80 $1070.54
5/26 $589.03 $298.12 $65.50 $10.40 $92.46 $11.46 $0.00 $59.09 $648.24 $1718.78
6/01     $30.70 $6.15       $23.74

RITA’S END OF WEEK 3 TOTALS

May 27, 2008 · No Comments

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend. ) Between company and out door yard work, I didn’t get as much listed as I wanted, but hopefully I can make it up during the week. I’m not using the chart this time since I can’t figure out how to make it fit in the space.

Here’s the break down of my 3rd week;

  1. Ebay Sales-214.17
  2. Inventory-89.58
  3. LF-6.30
  4. FVF-13.88
  5. PaypalF-9.82
  6. Milage-0.00 (went with sister in law, no charge)
  7. Totals-119.58
  8. Net-94.59
  9. Week 2 Totals-(-206.13)
  10. Total 3 Weeks (-112.22)

So I’m still in the hole for now. I relisted items that hadn’t sold on auction in my ebay store and hopefully they will sell before the challange is over. This is certainly a learning experience and I’m glad I decided to participate this year, really opens your eyes to what it can actually entail to run a small business, costs to operate, paper work, ect.

Thanks to Gary and all of you, I’m buying items I wouldn’t normally look at, will have to see how that works out for me.

Have a good one everyone )

Rita

2008 Garage Sale Challenge week 3: no car =(

May 27, 2008 · No Comments

Don’t know if I mentioned that my ebay id is jwirebooks and my AZ id is jncw.

We brought our daughter home from college, then she left for her summer job in her car, which I was borrowing while she was gone. So I am now without transportation in a rural setting. Needless to say, getting to sales and thirft stores is a challenge; I just have to wait for the weekend when my husband and his car are home.

I did manage to pick up some books at a library book sale on the way home from riding up to dd’s summer lodging.

Week 2&3 totals:

  • Spent on books: $24.90, Miles: $7.48
  • eBay sales: $43.75
  • fees : $4.65
  • postage: $9.88

Net profit to date: -24.13 :-(

OK, with a funeral, two graduations, and 1700 miles of traveling behind me, I will get back to selling!

BEST SALE: the Donvier Ice Cream maker that I got for 75 cents sold for $33.00 on eBay.

BanksAuctions — Weekly Sales Recap — Wks 1 & 2… FINALLY!!!

May 24, 2008 · 3 Comments

So at long last I can post my Wk 1 & 2 sales numbers.

Week 1 is about 90% accounted for with only a few items still unpaid, while week 2 is about 70%

For the 1st week (5/11) I listed 104 items. During this challenge I’ve decided to also implement some different strategies I’ve discovered reading various eBay newsletters. The auction queen advises to sell dinnerware and fine china either individually or in pairs rather than in large lots… so rather than list 2-3 auctions of the different porcelain china lots found, I listed 78 individual auctions!!
