The 2008 Garage Sale Challenge

Welcome To All The 2008 Garage Sale Challenge Participants

April 17, 2008 · 14 Comments

The 2008 Garage Sale Challenge blog will be the venue used by all participants in the Challenge to post their weekly or bi-weekly updates during the course of the Challenge which will officially begin on May 1, 2008.

Each participant will need to register here so that I can activate you as a contributor so that you can post your updates to the blog. Once you have registered, please leave a comment to this post stating that you have done so. When you do, I’ll receive an email notification and I will activate your contributor status within 24 hours and leave a comment informing you that your contributor status is live.

Prior to the actual start of the Challenge I encourage each participant to make at least one post telling a little about yourself. Feel free to include whatever information you are comfortable with sharing, but you should at least include your personal goal for the Challenge, whether you will be using eBay, Amazon, or both as a sales venue, and where you plan to obtain Challenge inventory from – garage sales, thrift shops, auction sales, or a combination of two or more.

I’ve set up individual categories for each participant using your first names. Through out the Challenge all your posts should be put into your individual category.

Prior to the start of the Challenge I also encourage you to make as many test posts as you wish to acquaint yourself with the posting process and to make yourself comfortable with the posting process.

Over the next three days, I will write some short tutorials about how to write a post, how to include active links to your auctions, how to include photos if you choose, and a few other tips to make the whole process as easy as possible. These can all be found under the Tutorial link at the top of the blog.

Any further question you might have can be asked either in the comment section below or by emailing me at theauctionrebel@gra.midco.net

Hi, Gary, I’ve registered. I will write a bit about myself later, but I’m planning on using garage sales and thrift stores. Since you’re allowing auctions, do swapmeets fall into that category?

    Diane,

Since we are adding auctions to the mix I guess we might as well include swapmeets and flea markets too. The idea is to show that people can make some money doing this so it might as well be open to the places people would normally find inventory.

Hi Gary and fellow Challengers :) . I’ve registered and look forward to seeing what everyone finds. I also look forward to celebrating success with you all. We sell on Ebay and Amazon and will be obtaining products for the challenge from Garage/Estate Sales and Thrifts. We may also Friend of the Library sales from time to time but it isn’t the bulk of our shopping.

    Thanks for including me!

Thanks for this Gary, I hope this is the way to register for the challenge. I sell on eBay and find all my products at garage sales, thrift stores and estate sales.

Let me know if I need to do anything further as far as registration goes.

    Thanks,

    Hi everyone!

My name is Rita and I sell on e-Bay. The majority of my items come from yard and garage sales along with estate auctions, love those box lots! Thrift stores are a 25-35 mile drive, so I don’t frequent those very often. I sell vintage glassware andpottery, along with vintage and new collectibles.

My goal for this challange is 3000.00 and since I live in a small rural town in Ohio, this will have me pushing hard to meet my goal. This challange is perfect timing for me as I had just recently decided to start selling full time instead of a hobby. Thanks Gary!

I can hardly wait until the first of May! I wish everyone luck in meeting their goals and I’m looking forward to sharing the Good, The Bad and The Ugly with all of you. LOL

Hi, My ebay name is bunniesrgreat, and my goal is to net $400 a month to begin with. I know it may seem like a small goal, but I want to start small and will adjust upward as I can.
    Can’t wait to get started.

    Gary,

I was reading your recent post and to be honest I first wanted to set my goal at $15,000.00 but decided on $12,000.00 because I thought that would be easier.

I’ve been at the “bronze” PowerSeller level a little longer than 2 years and to be honest, I think I’ve gotten fat & lazy.

Thanks for making me take a second look at things and really wanting to push myself and grow. With your help, this challenge can get me re-energized and jump-start my business.

So with that said, I’d like to adjust my sales goal upwards, but to also have it include three (3) specific parts.

    — $15,000 revenue in net sales

    — Build an Amazon.com Income Stream

    — Reach Silver PowerSeller Level

We should consistently strive to grow, and if while reaching for the stars we come up a little short we’ll still be floating around on clouds!

I’d like to remind all the participants this isn’t a competition, but an exercise to help us all become better eBay sellers.

The ONLY person you should feel the need to please or impress is yourself!

    Good Luck Everybody!!

Wow, I just found this article. The challenge sounds soooo exciting. Wish I knew about it at the start of the year :-( since I’ve been book hunting since then. If you want to try a free online UPC/ISBN lookup utility check this site out . Seems to be super new since no one is there, ha.

Doh, link didn’t show up. How do you get links to work?
